animal shelter statistics

Are you aware that North Carolina ranks 3rd in the nation in the number of pets euthanized yearly in animal shelters? Only Texas and California (with much larger populations than North Carolina) killed more pets. North Carolina shelters euthanized 62,000 animals in 2018. The main reason for euthanasia is overpopulation. Spaying and neutering your cat can help with these statistics. See Best Friends website for more information.

To see how your county rates as far as animals taken in, adopted and euthanized, you will need to scroll down the page to Animal Shelter Reports on the NC Department of Agriculture’s page. In 2019, Surry County Animal Control euthanized 1027 of 1467 cats taken in, a euthanasia rate of 70%. Stokes County Animal Shelter took in 461 cats and euthanized 344, euthanizing 75%. A shelter is a reflection of its community, not the shelter workers or shelter. Tell your county commissioners to support more funding for animal shelter programs to keep animals with their owners (food assistance). Ask your local shelter how you can help save more cats. Join local rescue and spay/neuter organizations to change the outcome for cats!
